BP-97 and BP-3181 Bogies brake detail kits

Separate kits are available for detailing the BP-97 and BP-3181 bogies. They comprise pewter castings of brake shoes, brake beams (spreaders), eye bolts and bolster channel sections from which brackets are hung. Brackets and linkages are photoengraved brass 0.25mm thick - a scale 3/8". These super detail kits have been designed to allow them to be added to already completed basic bogies either at time of first construction or as a later retro fit. They are a 'craft' kit requiring some experience with small components. A bit of patience goes a long way too!

An alternative brake detail kit:

Having assembled a trial kit of the BP-97 and BP-3181 brake details I realise that working with scale sized linkages will not be everybody's cup of tea. So I am offering a simplified brake detailing kit which is suitable for both the BP-97 and the BP-3181 bogies. It is intended to be a 'quickie' to visually 'fill the gap' that is evident when viewing bogies with no brakes but without the complex brake rigging. The kit comprises pewter cast bolster channels and brake beam (the same parts as the more detailed kits) and brake shoes with integrally cast hangers to be soldered to the channel. The following illustrations are of one complete assembly, there being parts for four such assemblies in the kit.

Fence posts

These posts are cast in pewter or white metal and are intended to be 'planted' in a 3.5mm hole drilled in the base board or scenery. All feature cast in 'staples' so that fine wire (or monofilament line) may be strung between the posts and the staples closed up to hold the wire.

Low Melt Solder, 6 cm stick, $6.00 incl GST

I used this solder to make up the pilot models of the bogies illustrated below. It has a melting point of 70 deg C. I recommend the use of a temperature controlled iron or a regular 30 to 40 watt iron operated through a solid state light dimmer switch so that the iron may be set to a temperature below the melting point of pewter or white metal.

NOW AVAILABLE

BP 97

$36.00 incl GST

This bogie kit makes up to a pair of pewter bogies as illustrated and includes wheels, brass bearings and (not illustrated) underfloor bolsters, king pins and mounting screws. This is a basic bogie kit and does NOT include brake rigging (see below) .

BP97 bogies were fitted to new 30' goods rolling stock from 1890 (class R-1) until 1934 (class Z-3).

BP 3181

$36.00 incl GST

This bogie kit makes up to a pair of pewter bogies as illustrated and includes wheels, brass bearings and (not illustrated) underfloor bolsters, king pins and mounting screws. This is a basic bogie kit and does NOT include brake rigging (see below).

As built uses I have noted are classes Uc-1, 1926-28; Uc-2, 1929. I have noted these bogies under a variety of wagons at Ferrymead, like a Vb and some U wagons but I fancy the original underframes may have pre-dated the bogies. Do you know of any use of BP 3181 before 1926? Tell us about it on nz_railchat.
